Delivering healthy fresh food to our neighbors in time of need is the core work of the Lititz Warwick Community Chest. Delivery volunteers coordinate directly with clients to bring food to the client's home. This maintains dignity, privacy and flexibility and also affords service to those without transportation.
How Does It Work?
After a client calls into our hotline, they connect with a phone consultant. The consultant confirms some basic details (address, contact phone number, number of people in the household, dietary restrictions, etc) then the consultant assigns the client to a delivery volunteer.
Delivery volunteers decide what their availability is each week and the size of family they can serve. Many volunteers work solo, but we have quite a few spouse or friend teams! When they are assigned a client, the volunteer calls the client to confirm what is needed in a food delivery. The volunteer and client coordinate directly to determine a convenient delivery date and time.
On the day of the scheduled delivery, the volunteer packs up non-perishable food and hygiene items at our Lititz location. These items include canned fruits, vegetables, soups, beans and protein, pasta, and cereal, as well as hygiene and cleaning supplies such as soap, shampoo, laundry and dish detergent, diapers and feminine care supplies as needed.
All non-perishable items are weighed and packed out of the pantry and into the delivery volunteer's vehicle. Then it's off to the grocery store for fresh food!
At our local grocery store, the delivery volunteer picks up healthy items like produce, dairy, eggs, bread and meat. We also include frozen vegetables and deli meat in every delivery.
Finally, the delivery volunteer meets the client at their home to make the delivery!
We'd love to have you join our team of volunteers! Please contact us by phone or email:
A volunteer will contact you to send you an application form and discuss any questions you might have. Once you return your application and we contact your references, we will set you up for a training session to walk you through the process.
Please contact us if you cannot find an answer to your question.
A standard delivery for a family of four takes about 60-90 minutes. We request that our delivery volunteers accept 2 deliveries per month, but you are welcome to take more as your schedule allows.
Delivery volunteers do need to feel comfortable carrying groceries up stairs and have a working vehicle to make deliveries.
Reach out anyway! We have lots of other ways to help be a force for good in the neighborhood!
Check out these ways to get involved!
